Guidelines on Fair Employment Practices Released by The Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (TAFEP)

The TAFEP has issued the Tripartite Guidelines on Fair Employment Practices (Annex A) that identify fair and progressive HR practices in areas such as job applications, interviews, progression, grievance handling, and so forth. The Guidelines will help employers recruit based on objective criteria and adopt progressive in-employment processes to give employees opportunities for growth and development based on merit. In dealing with grievances, employees should be provided the opportunity to present their case and be treated with respect.

2. The Guidelines were launched at the HR Congress organised by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI) by the Co-chairpersons of TAFEP, Mr Bob Tan, Vice-President, Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) and Council Member, Singapore Business Federation and Mdm Halimah Yacob, Assistant Secretary-General, National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).

3. Madam Halimah Yacob says of the Guidelines, "Every worker is entitled to a workplace free from discrimination, where he or she is assessed on merit and performance. These new Guidelines will help employers make their recruitment and selection processes fair and objective, which is a major step to achieve equity and meritocracy at the workplace. Let us work together to make Singapore truly a land of opportunity for all."

4. Mr Bob Tan notes that employers operating in Singapore have a responsibility to ensure that their practices are fair and that this is the right thing to do. He adds, "In today's globalised world, it is important for businesses to be able to reach out to and connect with a broader audience. Adopting these Guidelines will help employers position themselves more attractively to job seekers and customers, and retain valued employees."

ABOUT TAFEP

The Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (TAFEP) was formed in May 2006 as a result of the recommendation of the Tripartite Committee on Employability of Older Workers to promote employment practices that are fair and equitable to all workers.

The Alliance is co-chaired by Mr Bob Tan, Vice President, Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) and Council Member, Singapore Business Federation (SBF), and Madam Halimah Yacob, Assistant Secretary-General, National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Members include employer representatives, union leaders and government officials.

TAFEP seeks to encourage employers to adopt fair employment practices through promotional initiatives such as workshops, seminars, training programmes and educational materials. TAFEP believes that Fair Employment Practices will enable employers to attract and develop the best person for the job, and allow employees to realise their full potential and maximise their contribution. These Guidelines will form a critical part of TAFEP's promotional efforts.
