Platform workers

If you are providing ride-hail or delivery services under a platform work agreement, you may be considered a platform worker and be entitled to protections under the Platform Workers Act.

Who is a platform worker

A platform worker:

  • Is a ride-hail or delivery worker
  • Has a platform work agreement with a platform operator
  • Is under the management control of the platform operator when providing the platform service in return for payment or benefit in kind

If you are not under management control, you are not a platform worker but a self-employed person under a contract for service.

What is a platform work agreement

A platform work agreement is any agreement which includes, written or oral agreements, and expressed or implied agreements, between a platform operator and a platform worker for the provision of platform services to other persons for the platform operator but does not include a contract of service.

If you are employed under a contract of service with a platform operator, you are not a platform worker but an employee covered under the Employment Act.
